Built-Up Roofing Process
Installing built-up roofing at RENCO is accomplished by paying close attention to detail:
- Inspect and prepare the roof deck – make sure it is clean, dry, and structurally sound
- Install insulation (optional) – adhere rigid foam insulation using cold adhesive, hot asphalt, or mechanical fasteners
- Lay base sheet – attach a base sheet with nails, adhesive, or embed into hot asphalt
- Apply hot asphalt & ply sheets – mop hot asphalt on the base sheets and install the first ply sheet, and repeat
- Install flashing – embed roofing felt into hot asphalt around all penetrations
- Apply surfacing layer – there are three main options:
- Gravel (standard) – broadcast gravel into the asphalt while it is still hot
- Mineral surface cap sheet – install a mineral-coated sheet (torch-applied or embedded in hot asphalt)
- Reflective coating – apply aluminum or white reflective coating
- Seal and inspect – final cleanup and roof integrity inspection
- Alternatively, built-up roofing can be installed using a cold process
